It was an occasion that called for quality, cohesion and courage, and neither mac-interiors nor the Republic of Ireland team were found wanting. Spectacular views of our favourite city provided the backdrop to the mac-interiors summer party in Sophie’s last night in The Dean Hotel. Some pessimistic predictions notwithstanding, the spirits of our guests were high and optimistic as they started arriving for Italian food and Peroni beer in advance of the 8pm kickoff – Ireland vs Italy in The Euros.
Large screens. Beer. Pizza. Glorious sunshine. Views of Dublin. What more could a body want? We all watched, loyally supportive, hardly daring to hope for a goal. 85 minutes in, the score was still nil all.
Wes Hoolahan had blown a glorious one-on-one chance with the Italy goalkeeper, Salvatore Sirigu, but he did not allow his head to drop. Nor did any of the lads in green. Taking a pass from another substitute, Aiden McGeady, Hoolahan looked up and he whipped an inviting cross into the centre. Robbie Brady timed his arrival to perfection and headed home. Cue the outbreak of total bedlam in Sophies restaurant! What a richly-deserved victory! Never before have we won a final group tie to send us into the knockout rounds at a major finals and this result was against the mighty Italians. Key takeaway? Teamwork, loyalty and perseverance – recipe for success.
