M2M: Mizen Head to Malin Head 5 day cycling challenge in aid of Barretstown.

April 7-11, 2014

Barretstown needs your support!

Once a site of strategic significance for transatlantic shipping and communications, Mizen Head was for many seafarers the first, or last, sight of Europe.  Now it is commonly believed to be the most southerly point of the island of Ireland, and from the top of its deep chasm, our intrepid cyclists can bolster their spirits with a breathtaking view before setting off on their demanding 5 day expedition, with final destination Malin Head.

The distance between Mizen Head and Malin Head is almost 400 miles (640km). The route will be seeking to stay away from main roads and take in the scenery, while at the same time avoiding adding too many extra kms to this already arduous ride.

Monday (Day 1) will bring the group up the peninsula and on past Bantry Bay before heading inland passing Inchigeelagh and Macroom. They’ll continue along the river Lee before heading directly North for an overnight stop at Mallow.

Tuesday (Day 2) will be a slightly easier and shorter day through Charleville, Killmallock and Limerick before heading to Nenagh. The route will skirt the Ballyhoura Mountains before crossing the rich dairy farms of the Golden Vale.

Wednesday (Day 3) will be 150km – the longest day in terms of distance – however the terrain is more forgiving heading across the midlands. The first part of the route runs along Lough Derg before crossing a series of Boglands designated as natural heritage areas.

A shorter route of 110km on Thursday, (Day 4) to offer some recovery and to help the weary legs, proceeding through hilly territory. Perhaps one of the nicest days in terms of scenery the group will be spinning alongside Lough Allen and get glimpses of the sea as they make their way into Donegal town.

Being accessible by Bus from Dublin will hopefully give the opportunity for some extra riders to consider riding the last stage and lending their support.

Friday (Day 5): the final push (125k) from Donegal Town to Malin Head!  Located on the Inishowen Peninsula, Malin Head is the most Northerly point of the island of Ireland.

On arrival we will have a short celebration while the bikes get packed up, before boarding a bus to bring everyone to Derry city where a final meal and celebration can take place to acknowledge this fantastic achievement.

All donations, no matter how big or how small are VERY welcome and MUCH appreciated.
