What’s the Story with the Boats?

MSC Splendida is the longest ship to have ever docked at Dublin and her 333 metres pushed the boundaries of Dublin Port’s operational limits.  She was too long to turn in Alexandra Basin West, prior to departure – so detailed analysis of the challenges and meticulous planning of the manoeuvres was required in advance of making a decision to either reverse in or reverse out.

The pilots and the masters of tugs “Shackleton” and “Beaufort”, are credited with guiding the 140,000 tonne ship safely through waters which, though familiar to the  sturdy  little tugs, are uncharted for the MSC Splendida.   Allegory anyone?
