Assistant Accountant


Due to an internal promotion and the continued growth of the business, this is a great opportunity for a trainee accountant to build upon their skills by joining an experienced and well-established customer focused team, where they will be given the support and opportunity to develop and qualify as an accountant.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and results-focused, and will join our finance team, based in our Newry HQ office.

The Role

Daily Tasks:

  • Full operational control of the UK accounts payable function, including;
    • Managing the UK mailbox
    • Processing account set-ups; Know Your Customer (KYC) checks
    • Recording invoices, reconciling accounts and preparing payments
    • Ensuring invoices received are VAT compliant (training will be provided)
    • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to resolve discrepancies
  • Full operational control of the UK sales ledger, including;
    • Raising invoices as instructed by our quantity surveyors (QS)
    • Allocation of receipts
    • Sales account reconciliations
    • Posting inter-company recharges
    • Assisting with debt management
  • Other duties
    • Preparing UK VAT and Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) returns
    • Performing daily bank reconciliations
    • Posting petty cash transactions
    • Allocate expenses to projects and preparing payment files


Month End Tasks:

  • Prepare a month end close file, which reconciles and analyses each P&L and Balance Sheet account
  • Preparation and calculation of prepayments and accruals
  • Review of P&L codes and booking of journal reclassifications as required
  • Assist with the preparation of Management Accounts

The Candidate 

  • Undergraduate degree in related disciple (2.1 or above preferred) OR 2 years’ experience working in a fast-paced finance team
  • Highly personable. Team player. Open to sharing knowledge and skills
  • Analytical mindset, with the ability to identify problems and offer solutions
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills desirable
  • Flexible and hands on approach
  • Continuous improvement of process, procedure, and recommendations to ensure the payable and billing functionality is best in class
